Notes: Steve Hinton and Tsunami prepare to participate in the Unlimited Gold Heat on Friday afternoon at the 1989 Reno Air Races. 1989 was the year of the failed speed record attempt that resulted in heavy damage to the airplane. Steve Hinton qualified well but the race engine blew as he crossed the home pylon on his qualification run. The airplane was not really competitive for the rest of the event. |

Crashed. There was one fatality. The accident occurred at the Pierre Municipal Airport (PIR) Pierre, SD, United States while on appoach. The airframe was destroyed. The accident airplane was observed to suddenly roll inverted during final approach and descend into the ground. Investigation of the wreckage showed a bending overload failure of the external threaded stem type rod end bearing attached to the piston of each wing flap hydraulic actuator...
