    Notes: September 17, 1988 - Saturday UNL Heat 3A - Steve Hinton on the course between pylon 3 and pylon 4 setting a new race record at 462.218 mph.

    Notes: 1989 was a tough year for Tsunami. The failed speed record attempt meant hasty repairs compounded by a blown Merlin in qualifying. This picture was taken in the pits on Sunday morning of the 1989 Reno Air Races.

    Notes: Steve Hinton and Tsunami prepare to participate in the Unlimited Gold Heat on Friday afternoon at the 1989 Reno Air Races. 1989 was the year of the failed speed record attempt that resulted in heavy damage to the airplane. Steve Hinton qualified well but the race engine blew as he crossed the home pylon on his qualification run. The airplane was not really competitive for the rest of the event.

    Raced as #18, named Tsunami.
    Competed in the Texas Air Races event. The primary pilot was Steve Hinton. Qualified in 1st place with an average speed of 401.205 mph. Raced in Gold Heat. Finished in 1st place with an average speed of 369.963 mph. Raced in the Gold Semi-Final race. Finished in 1st place with an average speed of 420.730 mph. During the Silver final race three pylons were cut. During the Gold Heat race one pylon was cut. Shortly after the races Steve Hinton resigned as race pilot of Tsunami and recommended Skip Holm to replace him.

    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Skip Holm. Qualified in 3rd place with an average speed of 465.187 mph. Raced in Heat 2B. Finished in 4th place with an average speed of 416.452 mph. Raced in Heat 3C. Finished in 2nd place with an average speed of 443.326 mph. Raced in the Championship race. Finished in 2nd place with an average speed of 462.999 mph.

    Raced as #18, named Tsunami.
    Competed at the National Championship Air Races in the Unlimited class. The primary pilot was Skip Holm. Qualified in 2nd place with an average speed of 456.908 mph. Raced in Heat 2B. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 426.727 mph. Raced in Heat 3C. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 436.051 mph. Raced in the Championship race. Finished in 3rd place with an average speed of 478.140 mph.

    Crashed.
    There was one fatality. The accident occurred at the Pierre Municipal Airport (PIR) Pierre, SD, United States while on appoach. The airframe was destroyed. The accident airplane was observed to suddenly roll inverted during final approach and descend into the ground. Investigation of the wreckage showed a bending overload failure of the external threaded stem type rod end bearing attached to the piston of each wing flap hydraulic actuator...
