Aircraft was offered for exchange as part of NMUSAF Solicitation 20-001 ending 9/30/20 as follows:1983 Piper PA-48E Enforcer (FAA Registry N481PE / C/N 48-8301001) Aircraft Project, owned by the National Museum of the United States Air Force (NMUSAF) and determined excess to collection needs. Aircraft had an Avco-Lycoming YT-55-L-9 turboprop engine (engine was removed and is not included in the exchange offering) and is not airworthy or suitable for flight purposes. Data plate is present and legacy maintenance records are available for the aircraft. The Piper PA-48E Enforcer is a turboprop-powered light close-support/ground-attack aircraft built by Piper Aircraft Corp. Lakeland, Fla. It is based on the well-known North American P-51 of World War II fame. By direction of Congress, the USAF evaluated the aircraft beginning in 1983. Flight-testing was conducted on two aircraft in 1984 and the Air Force decided not to order the Enforcer.Since the Enforcer was never in the Air Force active inventory, it was not given an official military designation and did not receive an Air Force serial number. Instead, it carries the Piper designation PA-48E and Federal Aviation Administration registration number N481PE. Although the airframe resembles that of the P-51, the Enforcer is essentially a new aircraft. The aircraft offered for exchange is painted as it appeared during the 1984 Air Force tests. Military-specific equipment and parts have been removed to comply with statutes and regulations.

Based at Pima Air and Space Museum, Davis-Monthan AFB (South Side), Tucson, AZ.
