Notes: A71-4 with No.5 Communications Unit Townsville,

    14 February 1946

    Destroyed in a crash.
Crashed near Iron Range Camp, Queensland February 14, 1946. It was delivering rations from Garbutt Field, Townsville to Iron Range Camp. After over-nighting in Cairns, it stopped at Cooktown for fuel then encountered severe weather approaching Iron Range. Radio contact was lost and a search was activated. On February 19, 1946 the wreckage was spotted by a searching Catalina. RAAF Court of Enquiry found that the pilot was attempting to land due bad weather at the old Claudie bush strip 10 miles south of Iron Range when the port wing struck a tree. Pilot, one crew and one passenger were killed and the aircraft destroyed. Access to crash site was impossible because of flood waters.
